Samudra is a stunning unique property combining Asian antiques and artifacts, lush gardens, and a breathtaking beachfront location. Set within vast grounds, Samudra offers total tranquility and seclusion amidst natural tropical landscaping and large granite boulders. The sublime sea views across nearby islands to the distant mainland are always mesmerizing, yet most spectacular at sunset. A personal vision of its artist owner, Samudra is unconventional, poetic, and celebrates love of nature.
All of the wood used in the construction of this outstanding residence has been reclaimed. Door frames, windows, and furniture have been collected from around Asia and seamlessly integrated in Samudra. The historic appeal of these exotic and regal elements adds charm and timeless character.
A guarded gate leads to a private driveway ending at a parking area, from where meandering pathways made from Kanchanaburi river stone and heavy tree trunks link the various buildings that make up Samudra. The main building, named The Bali Room, is entered down a flight of steps through a dramatic entrance framed by antique wooden pillars, with double wooden doors opening to reveal a view of the pool and sea beyond. A corridor leads through the first building with en-suite double bedrooms on either side. Both bedrooms feature vaulted ceilings, hardwood floors, heavy wooden furniture, and open-air bathrooms.
The corridor leads down a flight of stairs into a garden area that separates the next building. The open-sided living room facing the pool houses a beautifully intricate set of 10 metre wide antique Balinese temple panels on the back wall. Comfortable sofas are arranged around a coffee table, offering a shady refuge to take in the stunning views beyond. Next to the Bali Room is the main kitchen in a detached building, which is fully equipped.
Steps lead to the turquoise stone-tiled infinity pool with natural-stone seating sunken within. To the right of the pool is a lawn plateau, with a thatched Sala incorporating an immense wooden dining table seating up to 24, which was crafted from a single timber recovered from a shipyard in Southern Thailand.
A gentle path leads
down to the beach, which is private due to the rock formations and reef
that make access difficult from outside the property. Following a flight
of stone steps, the underground Garden suite is carved out of the hill,
with double bed, kitchenette, and bathroom. A ventilation chute rises
out of the rear of the suite creating a natural airflow. Slide-away
glass doors across the whole width of this suite open onto the great
views down onto the beach and seascape beyond. A pull-down screen and
ceiling mounted projector with surround sound complete the suite. A pathway through the lush garden leads up to another enclave, including 2 bedrooms linked by a dressing room and sharing a fantastic garden bathroom, with double sinks, a large terrazzo tub, and a shower under a towering boulder.
Perched on a huge boulder, the final room is a masterpiece octagonal living room. The spacious open-sided room includes a raised kitchen, a casual lounge, and a balcony encircling the open face to immerse in the spectacular sea and sunset views. An informal dining table seating 10 is ideal for intimate al-fresco gathering. When the sun goes down, a pull-down screen and projector, with surround sound, provide cinematic entertainment.
